Secret! Shhhh!! Security device NO ONE can sell you! February 25, 2007

OK. Come a little closer.  I’m going to tell you the best security device out there BAR NONE!   I mean it! No one can sell you this, and it is FREE.  That is right….not for a limited time either.

This thing is self powered, constantly is supplied updates so it is always fresh on the trends and countermeasures, but you must pull in the updates manually. (Sorry – maybe 2.0 version will have that)    It is very efficient also.  It ends up that everyone should have this as it truly changes the way you think on security.  It contains gobs of memory, based on configuration and allocation of the memory, but needless to say, they are WELL configured when built.

Is it new?  Not really, but it has been improved upon throughout the years.  Same as when they came out originally, if we use them effectively and turn them on, well, they REALLY WORK!!  I am suprised that no one has really capitalized on this before, but it seems like it is the least used thing in security these days.  Why?  I don’t know, but surely hackers have been reverse engineering this technology for years and keeping up with the upgrades too.   (Rest assured that those who have turned theirs on, have been updated and configured to match or at times exceed the threat levels out there).

The big questions are:

Does it address the Zero Day Threats out there?   – Yes.

  • Can I (personally) reconfigure it to suit my enterprise?  – Yes.
  • Can these be hacked easily? Are they encrypted ?     -Yes / Yes (must close one port for best security to be enabled)
  • Does it adhere to Compliance requirements?  – Yes. (Obviously must be turned on!)
  • Does it accomodated for large data quantities? – Yes. (Must be configured to do so)
  • Is this a portable device?  – Yes. (Comes with a transporation bracket and case)

So now that you have to have one, and are willing to pay top dollar for it, you wonder what you missed when you filled out procurement budgets for devices and such.  Well, the best security device, rests between our ears!

Now the kicker!  What is the first think cut out of security budgets these past few years?  Education.  And yet this is the tool(s) that we need to updated our “firmware /programming/etc” for our brains!  If I had  $1 for every time I heard someone say during budget time (as they cut the education line item)  “Oh, your folks are smart, they will just get it!”  or ” You could pick up a book and figure it out!”  I would be a rich man. (I’m not though as no one actually gave me a buck!)

 Just a thought.  (updated 1.4)  :-)

*NEW* Catagory! Classic Cars February 25, 2007

Well, it is no suprise that I appreciate (deeply) the classic cars.  Something about the rumble of a basic engine where it used to be an art to tune by ear, sight, and yes, smell.  I would love to own one, but right now, it is an appreciation so far – that is inexpensive!

My dream car?  Tough one.  I would love to own a 64-67 Pontiac Tempest / GTO type car.  Big block, street racer.  Just a thought.  More to follow!

Cisco Networkers 2007 (Cannes, France) Part Deux February 7, 2007

Well interestingly, I have left on Friday morning and the show was in its last day.   Seems like people were better in trying to get information the last 2 days, rather than getting the prizes.   All in all, there were (to my knowledge) more admins and managers rather than CxO level folks.  If they were there, it did not seem as such by some conversations with me personally.

All in all, not a bad gig as (obiously) it was Cisco based.  The location was nice (not Nice as in Cannes next town over) :-)   and people were very accomodating to the conventioners.   Would I go back?  YOU BET!

Location impressions:  Cannes was very beautiful. Weather cooperated with some sun to warm up the day.  Take a jacket this time of year.    A bunch of things to see as far as architectural features, what looked like a castle and such.  The restaurants were very interesting, and seafood was the food du jour for the most part.  Good stuff!   A group of us stayed at the Hotel Bell Plage which was very hospitable, although as a person who has never been outside the North American continent, I have to say there was no shower but rather a tub with the “telephone” looking attachment.  No problem if you want to shower on your knees, but you adapt quickly when you weigh in the great view from the room.

People:  They were accommodating (although the Taxi driver from the Nice airport did “not speak English”)  and would make efforts to speak with you in your native tongue.  My french from high school came back to haunt me and managed to say very simple sentences.  No matter as everyone had been able to understand me.

Transportation:  I managed to fly direct to Nice airport, and did not have the “pleasure” of experiencing the airport in Paris (I hear it is NOT a good transfer point).  Since the taxi took me to the hotel directly, we managed to walk to and from the venue.  Nice scenery and nice weather….no worries!

Impression:  Nice place to visit, or even vacation.  If you have a choice of attending a conference in Cannes, or Nice France – GO! Don’t even think about it.  Unlike things I heard about Paris, Cannes is pleasurable and tourist friendly.  A conference there is just icing on the cake!

I am back now, and recommend one more thing.  Take a digital camera, and take LOTS of pictures.

:-)
